Chapter Eighteen

Montana woke up early the next morning. After a quick shift, he worked on his second cup of coffee by the campfire. What he really needed was a cold shower in that icy stream. After adjusting his hat, he stared at the remaining coffee in his metal cup. At least it was regular coffee. He couldn’t stand all that flavored stuff.

His thoughts drifted to the night before. He’d never been with a human, so it felt strange to look into a woman’s eyes and not see her wolf staring back. No, strange wasn’t the right word—intimate.

Robyn was the only woman who’d ever made his wolf sing, the only one who made him tremble like a leaf in the wind. And the way she touched him—no woman had ever been so attentive and delicate with him. Not that all Shifter women were the same in bed, but there were rituals typical among wolves.

Maybe he’d just been with the wrong women who always expected more and treated him roughly.

She’d mastered him like a captain, and he felt like a ship losing course in turbulent weather. It had been the first time he had ever ached to please another more than himself.

Fuck. He really needed her out of his head.

Fooling around with a potential future packmate was asking for trouble. Robyn wanted to join the pack, and honestly, she needed it more than he did.

She could have easily used him to become a Shifter, which might have secured her a spot in the pack. But that was a life-changing decision, one he had no business pressuring her into. She needed to feel safe, but how the hell could anyone feel safe with him?

Montana splashed the rest of his coffee into the fire.

At that moment, Lucian walked up and poured himself a cup. He didn’t seem fazed by the cold as he walked around in a tight black tank top. “I hate this shit.”

“Then why drink it?”

“We don’t have any energy drinks.” The Chitah sat in the lawn chair next to him and yawned. “I have insomnia. Caffeine helps. So does cold weather.” He took a sip. “That was some storm last night. Lots of howling.”

Touching the sherpa collar on his tan jacket, Montana replied, “Yep.”

Lucian slurped his coffee. “Sounded like a banshee.”

While descending the steps of the house, Tak put on a jacket with Native patterns and bright colors. He lazily walked around a chair on the left and sat down while Lakota dusted off the Adirondack.

Tak jerked his head at Montana. “How did your wolf do last night with Robyn?”

Nervous about lying, Montana cleared his throat. “Everything went fine.”

“Cozy enough?” His lips twitched. “Lucian here didn’t want a bed warmer.”

Lucian sipped his coffee loudly.

“I think I’m finally getting used to seeing your skull, Uncle.” Lakota unzipped his soft leather jacket and took a seat. “When can I send a picture to everyone?”

Resting his cup on his lap, Lucian asked, “How much do you love that pretty mane of yours?”

“You haven’t changed. Except that here, you don’t have a room to hide in.
